This is a classical Italian white variety that was grown in Ancient Rome and possibly even Ancient Greece! Due to its tendency for low yields compared to Trebbiano and other whites from Southern Italy it fell out of favour with growers and nearly died out in the 1900s. Luckily some winemakers in Campagna recognised its worth and it has had a revival of sorts.
Ours was grown in Tuerong just down the road and we purposely picked it quite early to capture the floral aromas and the variety’s renowned acidity. Lightly pressed, fermented with wild yeast and prepared for bottling all within 8 weeks! I would liken it most to a Riesling in style but with its own floral/spicy varietal characters and a bit more texture….try it for yourself!
